We saw the pediatric hematologist on Friday morning, and we ended up staying at the hospital for nearly 4 hours. After going over all kinds of family and medical history, examining her, taking her blood, running a cbc (complete blood count test) and looking at her platelets and blood cells under the microscope - the doctor still cannot figure out what is causing the petechiae on her legs. The good news is that it's not serious. I was worried to death that it would be cancer or leukemia, but the doc says all her numbers and counts are perfectly normal, and these "spots" are not connected to my condition. The doc thought that her platelets might be enlarged and "lazy," but after examining them under the microscope, she determined that is also not the case. She also said that if it was a viral infection, the petechiae would have disappeared by now, so we're down to one last test. The doc wants us to go to the Children's Dallas location for a platelet functionality test. They'll draw her blood again and then test to make sure her platelets are working properly. If they're not, she will just require extra platelets if she ever has to have surgery. If they are working properly, we have a medical mystery on our hands.
Thank you again for your continued prayers and support. It really means the world to all three of us.
