Family Visits!

The past couple of weekends we've gone to see family, and they've come to see us. We've had a lot of fun, and Madelyn is so lucky to be surrounded by people who absolutely adore her.

I Love Veggies!

This month we started vegetables!! We started out with butternut squash, and while she made a pretty sour face at the first taste, she soon decided she loved it!

Ick.

Somehow, the butternut squash ended up here...

I love to eat!

Since trying the squash, we've also tried (and she's loved) green beans and carrots. She LOVED the carrots. She only took about 1/3-1/2 a jar of the other two, but she ate an entire jar of carrots on her first try! I'm now making her food, and she's had "homemade" avacado and sweet potatoes. Of course, she loved both. I think the girl will be like me and just like to eat, period.

She's now eating cereal during the day at school and veggies and more cereal at home with dinner. The food is already helping her put on weight, and I've already noticed some thigh rolls (and dimples! ha ha!). When she turns 6 months, we'll be adding fruits to the mix. Yum!

5 Months

(I wrote this post a few weeks ago, so some of the info has already changed! But I like to keep track of her milestones at each month, so here you go!)

Where has the time gone?! Our sweet girl is growing so fast, but we are enjoying and absolutely loving every minute. She has really developed her own little personality lately, and she's learning and doing so many new things all the time! She's an absolute delight, and I can't imagine (or remember) our lives without her.

In the past month, she's gotten really good at eating the rice cereal. She's also decided that her new favorite chew toy is her pointer finger - just the one - and she's trying to sit up on her own! She lost almost all of her hair within a few days just before turning 5 months. I thought babies lost it earlier on - and I thought hers had thinned out. Apparently it hadn't thinned enough. The funny thing is, she lost all the hair on top only. So we've got business in the front, party in the back! :) We're still not great at tummy time, but she's getting better. She'll do the flying motion for a few minutes, but then she just buries her head and cries. I bet she'll be sitting before she rolls over. She is also more aware of what we're doing and will try to imitate our facial expressions. She sticks her tongue out a lot, and she loves to laugh, especially at us when we're laughing! One of my favorite moments of the day is when we look at each other in the mirror and laugh our butts off! There is simply no sweeter sound than the laughter of your child. Her giggles melt our hearts. :)

She's finally getting some thigh rolls!

She can rock her rocking chair now!

We are so blessed, and so in love.

Labor Day Fun

For Labor Day weekend we headed south to Ralph & Kathy's house. We originally planned to make our annual trip to Ziegfest at Lake Bryan, but none of our regular crew could make it with us. Rather than spend all that money in tickets and parking (okay, and beer), we decided to just hang out with our sweet girl and the rest of the family instead.

We had a GREAT weekend enjoying the simple things. We spent a lot of time out on the front porch. We watched and tried to photograph the hummingbirds. We watched the girls play at the "park" (Kaylie speak for the swing set in the back yard). We played with playdough on the picnic table. We cooked. We sat on the back porch. We went to church and had lunch with good friends. We watched the boys and Katherine play catch. We stayed in our pj's entirely too long. We took pictures. We took lots of pictures...

Saturday. First order of business? Playtime!

I can't believe this kid is growing up!

"Take my picture!" = what I heard all weekend from this little ham.

Hanging out with Crapaw (Kaylie accidentally came up with this, and it stuck. For all of us.)

We spent a lot of time out on the front porch. Oh, how I miss having (and spending lots of time on) a front porch with a swing (just a swangin!).

And now, more pictures of the little ham of the family. aka Kaylie Bug. The girly girl who loves having her picture taken. All. the. time. But who can resist this face?!

Take my picture!!!

"Wait, let me go get a dead tree branch because that will make the picture so much better!" This pic totally reminds me of Justin! ;)

And then, when she thought we weren't looking...

Our little family (and her 4th of July outfit finally fits!).

Our other sweet girl!

Sweet girls. Madelyn's a lucky girl to have two wonderful cousins!

Someone decided to try to sit up on her own this weekend!

Update

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for our sweet girl. While we have good news, the doctors are still stumped.

We saw the pediatric hematologist on Friday morning, and we ended up staying at the hospital for nearly 4 hours. After going over all kinds of family and medical history, examining her, taking her blood, running a cbc (complete blood count test) and looking at her platelets and blood cells under the microscope - the doctor still cannot figure out what is causing the petechiae on her legs. The good news is that it's not serious. I was worried to death that it would be cancer or leukemia, but the doc says all her numbers and counts are perfectly normal, and these "spots" are not connected to my condition. The doc thought that her platelets might be enlarged and "lazy," but after examining them under the microscope, she determined that is also not the case. She also said that if it was a viral infection, the petechiae would have disappeared by now, so we're down to one last test. The doc wants us to go to the Children's Dallas location for a platelet functionality test. They'll draw her blood again and then test to make sure her platelets are working properly. If they're not, she will just require extra platelets if she ever has to have surgery. If they are working properly, we have a medical mystery on our hands.

Thank you again for your continued prayers and support. It really means the world to all three of us.

Prayer Request

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I am completely and utterly exhausted these days. Life is absolutely wonderful at home, but when I walk out the door each morning, it turns to chaos, it seems. Work and school and homework just don’t seem to be on my priority list anymore, as all I want to do is spend time with my sweet girl and her daddy. We have lots of updates and pictures from Labor Day, Madelyn turning 5 months, eating veggies, visiting Lolly, the hot air balloon festival and just her being cute, in general, but those will have to come at a later date.

One thing I do want to update our family and friends on immediately, though, is a prayer request for our sweet girl. On Labor Day weekend I noticed a rash on Madelyn’s legs. The spots looked like pin pricks, and they were under her skin. My mother in law Kathy, who is a pediatric RN, mentioned that she probably just had a little virus that caused them. A week and a half later, the rash was still there. I googled and found out the “rash” was actually petechiae, something that the “online experts” say warrants an immediate call to the doctor. We saw the pediatrician last Wednesday evening, and he was stumped. She hasn’t been sick, she hasn’t been acting any differently, her appetite is normal – she’s our usual happy little baby. He doesn’t think it was or is being caused by a virus. I told him about my blood issues, so they ran a blood test on her, even though her blood test at birth came back normal. I can honestly say that that was the worst few minutes of my life. They pricked her finger, and it seemed like it took the nurse FOREVER to get enough blood for the tiny little vile. Combine that with the fact that it was nearly an hour past her bedtime and she didn’t nap well that day at daycare, and you get one pissed off baby girl. It took us a good 10 minutes to get her calmed down after the test. The doc came back and explained that her platelets were normal – in the high 170’s – and her white and red blood cells were all normal, so he wanted to confer with the head of pediatric hematology at Children’s Medical Center. The hematologist wants to see her, so we’re headed there tomorrow.

I normally tend to make a big deal out of things that aren’t such a big deal, but I am really scared right now. It didn’t really hit me until yesterday, and this morning I’m having a really hard time getting all the negative thoughts and “what if’s” out of my head. To me, Children's = really sick kids, and our girl doesn't belong there. There’s a long lists of what could be causing this “rash,” some things aren’t a big deal and some are – I just pray and pray and pray that it’s one of the “not such a big deal” things.

If you have a moment today, please say a little prayer for our sweet girl that everything will go well tomorrow. I found the following scripture on another blog this morning, and it seems oh-so-fitting for our situation:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. --Philippians 4:6

4-Month Pics

Last month, we had professional pics done, and I am so pleased at how they turned out. Here are a few of our faves.

Goodbye World

Sorry for the lack of blog posts lately. Three weeks ago I started back to school. I'm a little less than enthusiastic about being gone two nights a week because it means I pretty much don't get to see (well, see her awake anyway) my girl several days out of the week. I take her to daycare on my school days, but she's fast asleep by the time I get home (and she is usually still asleep when I leave for work the next morning). :( I hate that I have to miss out on those moments with her, but I know I will regret not finishing my degree if I quit now. I've put too much time and effort into it. Sooo, this semester I'm taking a diversity in organizations course and managerial accounting. After this semester, only 6 more classes! There is a light at the end of the tunnel! MBA, here I come!

A Few Videos

*disclaimer* The following videos are not the most exciting videos you've ever seen, I know. But I think my kid is the cutest kid on Earth, and I video just about everything she does. Smile. Oh, get the camera! She giggles. Oh, grab the camera, hurry! She toots. Wasn't that the funniest little toot?! Get the camera! So feel free to skip this post if you've already met your cute kid quota for the day (but I'm sure you haven't). :)

Madelyn has her own little language. She talks up a storm, and I can't help but laugh when she does this (and she does it often).

She's finally starting to grab at her toys, and she LOVES her little frog that Nick & Ella gave her.

She also is a little giggler nowadays. But she never wants to giggle when we put the camera in her face. She does like to copy us when we make faces at her, though.

My New Favorite Chew Toy

My finger. Just the one.

Gymboree

Two weekends ago Madelyn and I attended our first Gymboree class. In doing so, we helped support another local mommy who is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training by running a marathon later this year. This organization is very near and dear to my heart, and I was honored to help our mommy friend raise money for such a great cause.

I had to wake Madelyn up from her nap when we got there, but she was so intrigued and amazed by all that was going on around her the entire time we were there. She was the youngest baby in the group, but she had so much fun nonetheless. I'm sure she'll enjoy it much more when she is mobile -- the kids who could crawl and run around all seemed to have a blast!

I took my camera but didn't even take it out of my bag. I had to borrow these from another mommy from the group.

Saying hi to our new friends

We're looking forward to many more fun classes with our new friends!
